"BILYA BENEATH"
Bilya Beneath is a deeply evocative short film and immersive event(PIAF 2021) inspired by the fact that Northbridge was built on what was once a vital source of fresh water for the Whadjuk Noongar people. Each night from 8 pm, on the hour, the Perth Cultural Centre came alive as the Art Gallery of WA, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, State Library, State Theatre, and WA Museum Boola Bardip are transformed into canvases for vibrant 360-degree projections, animations, and music that celebrate Northbridge’s submerged waterways. The visuals Directed by David Vincent Smith are accompanied by Boodja Kooradarminy, a new composition from Noongar singer-songwriters Della Rae Morrison and Charley Caruso, performed by Morrison and respected local figure Barry McGuire. Between performances, looped visuals continue to wash the buildings in vivid colour, creating a continuous, immersive tribute to the area’s hidden water heritage.
